It is a Partnership

If you didn’t already know our generations desire to celebrate our uniqueness is real and that I'm all for because well we are all the exception and changing the rules.  One of those rules that has changed is the employment relationship dynamic.

Unlike previous generations, we see EMPLOYMENT AS A PARTNERSHIP

A partnership with shared accountability, responsibility and expectations...

Accountability is a two way street that includes rewards AND punishment – also known as opportunity for growth.

Responsibility means that you are required to do things – some of which you might not agree with.

Expectations are beliefs that something will or should happen and they are okay as long as they are clearly communicated and agreed upon.

Although I’ve been told to leave the expectations at home on a day or two but the reality is that I can’t. Think about it - if we did what we do as employees in a one on one basis – we’d be married in most places and at the very least considered to be exclusive even by Tinder standards. I’m going to tell you all my personal information (where I lived, worked, my social, and what I want to do in life), tell you about who I am and my personal intricacies,  spend most of my time with you and celebrate our time together as an anniversary. Hell, for all of that, I also like long walks on the beach, prefer pinot noir and my ring size is an 8.  #expectationsonthetable #herecoomestheBUT

While your uniqueness does warrant special treatment – basic tenants and laws around fairness and equity says that there has to be consistency in opportunity and application of programs. That doesn't mean that there shouldn't be a way to differentiate - there are ways but understand how your organization does that and what the criteria is.

So before we tweet the revolution, let’s ask questions to build mutual understanding around this relati…I mean partnership.
